Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport narrowly prevented a disaster on Saturday when an Air India flight took off while an IndiGo aircraft was in the process of landing on the same runway.
As per reports, It was a scary moment when an IndiGo flight from Indore got permission to land on the same runway where an Air India plane was taking off for Thiruvananthapuram. This close call involved two Airbus A320neos. The IndiGo flight, numbered 5053, was coming from Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport and was supposed to land on Runway 27. Meanwhile, Air India’s flight 657 was getting ready for takeoff to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.

There was a tense moment as an Air India flight was speeding down the runway for takeoff while an IndiGo flight was descending to land. Thankfully, the Air India plane managed to lift off just in time, narrowly avoiding a collision with the IndiGo aircraft.
‘On June 8, 2024, passengers aboard IndiGo flight 6E 6053 from Indore experienced a moment of concern as the aircraft was granted landing clearance by ATC at Mumbai Airport. Despite this, the skilled Pilot in Command executed the approach and landing as instructed by the Air Traffic Control. IndiGo, deeply committed to passenger safety, promptly reported the incident in accordance with our stringent protocols,’ shared a spokesperson from IndiGo with a leading aviation news outlet.
Amidst the unfolding events, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated an investigation into the incident. In a move reflecting seriousness, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) personnel responsible for authorizing the IndiGo’s flight landing on the occupied runway has been temporarily relieved from duty, awaiting the investigation’s findings.
