New Delhi: A tribal woman from Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh has been preserving a variety of millet seeds for over a decade, which were in peril to vanish.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday lauded the woman for her understanding and “enthusiasm” which saved many nutritious millets to extinct.

“Proud of Lahari Bai, who has shown remarkable enthusiasm towards Shree Ann. Her efforts will motivate many others,” tweeted the Prime Minister.

Lahiri Bai (27), the tribal woman “is becoming the brand ambassador of millets,” said a press release issued by the Centre.

In an interview to DD News, Lahiri Bai told the reporters about her motivation for taking the step to preserve the seeds. She said the millets they used to sow were vanished from the village so they brought the same from nearby areas.

Lahiri Bai then, started producing those millets in her farms, alloting a little area to each of the crop. She also distributed these seeds to farmers in her village which helped to increase the production of these millets.

Following the harvesting, Lahiri took back the seeds to preserve them.

Apart from her village, she also distributed seeds in neighbouring villages for free. As per the officials, at least 400-500 farmers were provided seeds.
