Modi Surname Case

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Friday alleged that the defamation laws were misused. This comes after the Gujarat High Court upheld the lower court’s conviction on senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the ‘Modi Surname Defamation Case.’

“Defamation law was misused… We trust the law system, the judiciary and the Supreme Court but the court above the apex court is people’s court. We are showing the people the cottage industry of hurling accusations set up by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers so that free speech stops…” said Singhvi while holding a press conference after HC’s verdict on Friday.

Singhvi clarified that the next step the Indian National Congress will take is to knock doors of the Supreme Court seeking relief to Rahul Gandhi in the case as the latter was disqualified from Lok Sabha following the conviction.

While addressing the conference, the Congress leader lashed out at the Centre and said that the latter wants to thrawtle freedom of speech of media and Rahul Gandhi.
