The Indian government initiated assistance for building homes with basic amenities for eligible urban and rural families in 2015-16. Under this scheme, 4.21 crore homes have been constructed for eligible impoverished families in the past decade. In the crucial first meeting of the cabinet held today, it was decided to further expand this scheme due to the increase in the number of eligible families.

In the first cabinet meeting of Modi’s new term, it was decided that due to the increase in the number of eligible families, there has been a rise in the housing needs, and therefore, assistance will be provided to an additional 3 crore rural and urban families for home construction. All these homes will be equipped with essential facilities such as electricity, water, and gas connections.

It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the MPs included in his cabinet took the oath of office on Sunday. While the BJP won with a majority in the previous two elections, it did not secure a majority this time. It is worth mentioning that in Modi’s current cabinet, there are 30 cabinet ministers, 5 ministers of state with independent charge, and 36 ministers of state.
