A minor snow avalanche occurred on Tuesday at the Kongdori area of the renowned Gulmarg ski resort, a popular winter destination in the Kashmir Valley. Fortunately, no loss of life or property damage has been reported.
The avalanche was a controlled event, executed as part of routine winter safety protocols aimed at ensuring the safety of skiers and visitors. The Assistant Director of Tourism for Gulmarg explained that controlled blasting was carried out at the Afarwat slopes to prepare them for skiing and to mitigate the risk of natural avalanches in the future.
“This controlled avalanche was part of our routine winter exercise, carefully managed under the supervision of our Snow Safety Officer and the team,” the official stated, emphasizing the importance of these safety measures.
Brian Newman, the Snow Safety Officer for Gulmarg, reassured both tourists and locals that this practice has been a long-standing protocol and there is no cause for concern. “These measures are essential for enhancing the safety of skiers and visitors at our resort,” he said.
Authorities highlighted that such exercises are integral to the resort’s preparations for the winter season, helping to manage potential risks posed by heavy snow accumulation. As the tourist season continues, the administration in Gulmarg are taking all precautionary measures to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all the tourists and skiers.
