A Mumbai-bound Air India flight suffered engine failure soon after taking off from Delhi IGI Airport on Monday. The aircraft, with 335 people on board, returned safely to the Delhi airport.
Air India flight AI-887 returns safely
The twin-engine aircraft, AI-887, landed safely at the Delhi airport on one engine, bringing relief to passengers and officials on the ground. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is probing the cause of the engine failure.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation posted on X: “The Ministry of Civil Aviation has taken note of the Air India flight AI-887 incident involving a technical issue shortly after take-off. The aircraft landed safely. The Ministry has sought a detailed report from Air India, and the DGCA has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation. The airline has been directed to extend all assistance to passengers and accommodate them on subsequent flights. Passenger safety remains paramount.”

Air India arranges alternate flight
The flight took off at 6:10 am from Delhi airport and returned at 6:52 am per flight tracing time. The DGCA also ensured that passengers should not face any inconvenience. Air India arranged another flight AI-777 to take them to their destination. The passengers were given refreshment. The alternate flight took off around 10:30 am.
AI-887 returned as per SOP
“The crew operating flight AI 887 from Delhi to Mumbai on Dec 22 decided to return to Delhi shortly after take-off due to a technical issue as per standard operating procedure. The aircraft landed safely at Delhi and the passengers and crew have disembarked. Air India sincerely regrets inconvenience caused due to this unforeseen situation. The aircraft is undergoing the necessary checks. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew remain top priority,” Times of India quoted AI spokesperson as saying.
