In an emotional appeal for peace, former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti broke down in tears during a press conference on Friday, questioning the senseless loss of innocent lives, particularly minors, in the ongoing conflict. Her heartfelt remarks came against the backdrop of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, which have led to increased violence and casualties along the borders.
Speaking in Srinagar, Mehbooba urged both nations to exercise restraint and prioritise dialogue over aggression. “Casualties on the borders are deeply unfortunate. What is the fault of innocent children who have lost their lives?” she asked, her voice trembling with emotion. “Immediate restraint and de-escalation are the need of the hour. It is crucial to apply wisdom in handling the present situation.”
What Did Mufti Say?
The former Chief Minister said that violence, whether in Pulwama or Pahalgam, has far-reaching implications that could spiral into global consequences. She expressed her deep concern for the safety of civilians caught in the crossfire, particularly children who bear the brunt of these conflicts.
She advocated for political intervention amid the escalating India-Pakistan tensions. She stated that ‘Military action treats symptoms, not the root cause’ and never provides solution or peace. Mufti appealed to leaders of both sides to arrive at conclusion and “end this attack.” While speaking on the current developments and crossfire, Mufti stated that both India and Pakistan should opt for political intervention instead of military intervention.
She further stressed that both the countries have settled the accounts equally and appealed to leaderships to end the war. “Their purpose has been served after they claimed to have conducted a major strike (Operation Sindoor). Similarly, Pakistan is claiming that they shot down our fighter jets and destroyed brigade headquarters in Poonch. That means both of them settled the accounts equally. I appeal to Pakistan’s leadership and to PM Narendra Modi, who promised that the era of war has come to an end… If both Prime Ministers can just pick up the phone and resolve this conflict,” stated Mehbooba Mufti.
