New Delhi: Amid reports of arson and damage in parts of the state, the Meghalaya government on Thursday extended the suspension of mobile Internet and data services in seven districts by another 48 hours.

In a notification, the state’s Home Secretary CVD Diengdoh said reports of arson and damages to Assam-registered vehicles from various parts of Shillong and other pockets of Jaintia Hills districts in Meghalaya.

Noting that, the notification said, messaging system like WhatsApp and social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, You Tube etc. are likely to be used for transmission of information through pictures, videos and text, having the potential to cause serious breakdown of law and order.

“The government decided to extend the suspension of mobile Internet and data services by 48 hours in West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills districts.”

The notification read that violators of the promulgation will be penalised under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and also the related provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.

Internet suspension after violent clash that killed 6

The Meghalaya government on Tuesday issued an order suspending mobile internet services in seven districts of the state for 48 hours after six persons including one Assam forest official were killed in firing incident in Mukroh village in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills.

It was announced after five civilians and one Assam forest guard were killed in a firing incident that took place at the Mukroh area along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday morning.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma had said, “6 persons died due to firing by Assam Police and Assam Forest Guards.”

Strongly condemning the incident, Sangma had claimed that the Assam Police & Assam Forest Guards entered Meghalaya & resorted to unprovoked firing.
