A stunning feat of hard work and resilience has come to light from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. For over 50 years, Chakradhar Rana, also known as the ‘Papad Man’, has been strolling the steets of Udala, dedicatedly selling papads to support his family. Through rain, sun or wind, Rana has shown unwavering commitment towards his work.
Against all odds, the ‘Papad’ man covers 30 to 40 km daily carrying a load of the crispy appalam on his head till he reach the local market. He charges a modest price of Rs 10 for the papad and makes sure his old age doesn’t stop him from doing his work.
Journey Of ‘Papad Man’
Rana’s journey as a papad vendor started 50 years ago. During that time, he sold the Indian snack for 5 and 10 paise each. “Currently, I sell them for Rs 10. I bring my papads from Kolkata and make a sale of 1000 units approx. per day,” he told ANI.
Chakradhar takes immense pride in his long-standing career and sees no same in his profession. His inspiring story and strong sense of integrity has made him a beloved figure in his community.
A Local Recalls His Childhood Memories
Rabin Monanty, a local resident recalled his memories with the ‘Papad Wala’ during his childhood. “He’s a familiar figure in our Udala region, renowned for selling his papads at various markets. Everyone knows and loves him as ‘Papad Wala,” he said.
He further stated that Rana can easily be recognized from his outfit- White shirt, Half pant and papad basket. What makes him stand out is not only his dedication but also his good behaviour with customers.
“He sells his papads at around 70 to 80 markets in our region and travels about 30 to 40 kilometres to Dukura,” Mohanty added
