McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut and more popular brands set to open at Indian railway stations soon; details inside

Indian Railways is introducing a new 'Premium Brand Catering' category, allowing major food chains like McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut and Haldiram’s to open outlets at stations.

Indian Railways is preparing for a major food makeover and passengers are loving it already. In a new move, the Railway Board has approved a special category called ‘Premium Brand Catering Outlets’, clearing the path for global and top Indian food brands like McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Haldiram’s, Bikanerwala, Baskin Robbins and more to set up shop at railway stations.

This means travellers may soon find their favourite burgers, pizzas and snacks right at the platform, bringing station amenities much closer to what airports already offer.

Why railways wants big brands at stations

According to officials, many redeveloped and high-footfall stations are now ready for modern food outlets and passengers have been demanding better and more hygienic options. The new policy allows these premium brands to apply for space through a transparent e-auction process.

The outlets can be fully company-owned or run through franchise partners, but all will have to follow strict quality and service standards set by the Railways.

The idea is simple, as stations get upgraded, the food experience should improve too.

What it means for passengers

For daily train travellers, this move is a big win. You won’t have to depend only on regular stalls or pantry food anymore. A wider range of reliable, branded options will soon be available, whether you’re waiting for a train or rushing during a short halt.

This is also expected to boost competition, pushing overall hygiene and service quality higher at stations. Brands, on the other hand, gain access to a massive customer base, making railway stations one of the biggest new retail opportunities in India.

The rollout will happen in phases and major junctions are expected to see these outlets first once the bidding process is completed.

Travellers can look forward to spotting famous brand signboards on platforms sooner than expected and enjoying their favourite meals while on the move.
