The entire country, including Delhi-NCR, is currently under the grip of intense cold. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, dense fog, cold waves, and snowfall have increased both chill and freezing temperatures. As a result, the temperature in most parts of the country has dropped to minus. Dense fog has covered Delhi today, and the city is as cold as Shimla, with both Delhi and Shimla recording a minimum temperature of 5°C. People are lighting bonfires to stay warm.
In Karauli, Rajasthan, the temperature is 1.3°C. In 12 cities of Madhya Pradesh, the minimum temperature has dropped below 8°C, with the lowest recorded temperature being 3.3°C. According to the weather department, a low-pressure area formed over the South-West Bay of Bengal is likely to move towards the west-central part of the Bay of Bengal. Over the next 12 hours, this area is expected to move towards the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coast, and in the next 24 hours, it will move northward along the Andhra Pradesh coast. A trough-like structure in the lower and middle troposphere is activating the western disturbance.
This will lead to the activation of cyclonic circulation over the lower parts of north-western Rajasthan. A fresh and active western disturbance may impact the western Himalayan region and surrounding plains around December 27. Due to these weather conditions, light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is expected at some places in coastal Andhra Pradesh, northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Odisha, and coastal Gangetic West Bengal. Stormy winds with speeds of up to 45 km per hour are also possible.
