On Sunday, an avalanche swept over Gandhi Sarovar in Kedarnath, Uttarakhand. A video shared by the news agency PTI captured the avalanche rushing down the slopes.

Rudraprayag senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dr. Vishakha Ashok Bhadane informed ANI that an avalanche occurred from above Gandhi Sarovar in Kedarnath around 5 am today, with no casualties or property damage reported.

An avalanche occurs as snow rapidly flows down a hill or mountainside. Warning signs include cracking sounds, visible fractures in the snow, and recent heavy snowfall.

Earlier this month, Kedarnath Dham saw a massive influx of devotees, with the number exceeding 700,000 by June 6th.

According to the district magistrate of Rudraprayag, 710,698 pilgrims visited the world-famous 11th Jyotirlinga Kedarnath Dham in just 28 days since May 10th.

On May 22, State Chief Secretary Radha Raturi issued an advisory mandating registration for all pilgrims participating in the Chardham Yatra by the Uttarakhand government.

According to a PTI report, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla proposed constituting a committee to develop a strategy for managing the Chardham Yatra in the future. He emphasized the need for rigorous monitoring of yatra management at the ground level.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami stated, ‘Due to the development of roads, air traffic, and other infrastructure facilities, twice as many pilgrims have visited the state for the Chardham Yatra compared to last year. Last year saw a total of 19 lakh pilgrims visiting Kedarnath, whereas this year, 10 lakh pilgrims have already arrived.’

On June 18, a collapse of a ‘dhaba’ on the Kedarnath trail in Rudraprayag injured seven pilgrims from Madhya Pradesh and Haryana.
