New Delhi: The Police on Friday detained several students from the Arts campus of Delhi University after a ruckus broke out over screening a controversial film ‘India: The Modi Question’ on the campus.
“We are standing outside the Arts Faculty gate at DU. Situation is normal. Around 4pm, 20-25 people came here to screen a banned BBC documentary. They were told to go back as it’s banned. When they did not, they were detained and situation became normal,” said SS Kalsi, DCP North.
Kalsi further said that some students went inside the campus who attempted to screen the film but failed. “Right now, at 6 pm, the situation is normal everywhere. The students who went inside have also left,” he added.
Earlier in the day, several student unions including Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India called for screening at 4 pm on north campus whereas the Bhim Army Students’ Federation also planned to run documentary outside the varsity’s Arts Faculty at 5 pm.

However, this followed a major brawl between the police and students who wanted to watch the documentary on campus. The students alleged that the Delhi Police entered the Ambedkar University campus in an attempt to stop Students’ Federation of India (SFI) activists.

As per various media reports, the students had made alternative arrangements to watch the document already. They prepared a QR code along with a link through which, the students could easily watch the film.
A similar attempt to show the documentary was adopted in the Jawaharlal Nehru University. Aishe Ghosh, president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union, flashed a paper with QR code that would open a link to watch the documentary.
In a loud voice, Ghosh urged students to watch the movie despite attempts of police to stop the screening.

A few days back, the student union had planned to screen the film but failed due to hours-long power cut and internet shutdown in the campus. After which, stduents resorted to watch the film on their personal devices.
However, the same attempt was made to watch the film in Jamia Millia Islamia despite the authorities disallowed the screening on the campus.
