A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, reportedly resulting in the loss of at least 129 lives and leaving dozens injured. The death toll was anticipated to climb as communication with several areas was disrupted. The quake’s tremors were even felt in New Delhi, India, over 800 kilometres (500 miles) away.
The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake’s preliminary magnitude as 6.4, occurring at a depth of 11 miles. The National Earthquake Monitoring & Research Center in Nepal identified the epicentre in Jajarkot, approximately 250 miles northeast of Kathmandu, the capital.

Rukum district bore the brunt of the quake, claiming the lives of at least 35 people as numerous houses collapsed, as reported by police official Narvaraj Bhattarai. Thirty injured individuals were rushed to the local hospital. In the neighbouring Jajarkot district, government administration official Harish Chandra Sharma confirmed the death of 34 people.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the darkness and blocked trails due to landslides triggered by the quake and its aftershocks. Earthquakes are a frequent occurrence in Nepal’s mountainous terrain, with a devastating 7.8 magnitude quake in 2015 claiming the lives of approximately 9,000 people and causing significant structural damage.
