Manipur violence: 40 militants killed
Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh on Sunday said around 40 armed militants have been gunned down by security forces since launching the operation to bring peace in caste-ridden Manipur. The militants were involved in setting houses on fire and firing on civilians. Singh said there have been cases of armed terrorists firing on civilians with AK-47, M-16 and sniper rifles. The security forces targeted these terrorists in retaliation.
Amidst the violence, the country’s Home Minister Amit Shah will visit the state today. Amit Shah will hold a meeting with the Chief Minister and ministers to inquire about the situation.
Reason of Violence
Manipur first witnessed ethnic clashes that claimed over 75 lives after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts on 3 May. These rallies were organised in protest against the demand of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) of the Meitei community. Due to the violence, curfew has been imposed in many areas. Furious Kuki community people are targeting government officials and leaders.
Meites constitute about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and mostly live in the Imphal Valley. The tribal Nagas and Kukis constitute 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill districts.
