New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday informed that it has registered six cases and set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate Manipur violence. 

As per CBI, an officer of DIG rank will head the investigative team. More than 100 people died in the violence that began on May 3, while more than 35,000 people were displaced.

The CBI will probe whether the violence was mere caste conflict or pre-planned. According to official information, Over 3,700 cases have been registered in the state since the violence broke out. Most cases have been reported in the Imphal West district. 

Earlier, Home Minister Amit Shah said that a judicial commission would be formed to investigate the violence incidences that happened in Manipur.

The Home Minster announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and a government job to one family person of the deceased. Five lakh rupees will be given by the central government and five lakh rupees will be given by the state government.

On the last day of his visit to the northeastern state, Shah said a judicial commission headed by a retired justice would probe the violence to find out who is responsible for this violence. 

He said that a peace committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of the Governor of Manipur, which includes businessmen, sportspersons, representatives of political parties, and representatives of civil society. They will work to restore peace in the state.
