New Delhi: Nearly 60 people died while 231 were injured and around 1,700 houses burned down in the violence in Manipur, informed state Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday. The devastating situation in Manipur took after protests broke out in several place. Among ghastly impacted districts, there were Imphal West and Churachandpur. Earlier, the Chief Minister had urged people to retain law and order situation in the state, saying that the violence broke out due to a prevailing misunderstanding between two sections of our society.

Manipur Crisis

Manipur was hit by violence on May 3 during the course of a solidarity march called by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) in Torbung area of Churachandpur, to protest the lonstanding demand of the Meitei community to include them in the list of the state’s Scheduled Tribes (ST). Earlier last month, the Manipur High Court directed the state government to consider the request of the Meitei, that caused dissatisfaction among other tribal groups.
