Manipur: Fresh Violence Erupts Between Rival Village Volunteers

In Manipur, a troubling escalation of violence unfolded as clashes erupted between Meitei and Kuki village volunteers. According to state police, the conflict began when a group of armed individuals launched a sudden and indiscriminate attack on Koutruk village.

Situated on the outskirts of the Imphal Valley, Koutruk found itself under fire from the adjacent hills in Kangpokpi district. The barrage of bullets not only pierced the walls of homes but also posed a significant threat to the safety of residents, including children, women, and senior citizens. To compound the danger, the assailants employed locally-made mortar shells, escalating the severity of the situation.

In response to the onslaught, the village volunteers of Koutruk didn’t back down. Instead, they retaliated against the attackers, sparking a fierce gunfight. The exchange of gunfire between the opposing sides intensified, plunging the area into chaos and fear. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, authorities swiftly mobilized security forces to quell the violence and restore order. The deployment of security personnel aimed to contain the conflict and prevent further bloodshed in the already tense region.

Meanwhile, the recent outbreak of violence in Koutruk comes on the heels of another disturbing incident in Bishnupur district. Just a day prior, two soldiers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) fell victim to a brazen militant attack. The assault, characterized by its premeditated nature, targeted a CRPF post with grenades and a hail of bullets. The attackers, numbering over a dozen and yet to be identified, executed their assault shortly after midnight, catching the security forces off guard. The incident marks the first direct targeting of a central force in almost a year, underscoring the persistent security challenges facing the region.
