What caused violence in the state
The state’s harmony was first disturbed on May 3, when violence broke out in Churchandpur, a town located just south of the state capital Imphal. After the disruption, the ethnic group Kuki commenced a solidarity march in ten out of the state’s sixteen districts.
In response, when another ehnic group Meitei organised counter-protests and blockades, clashes spurred across Manipur.
Around 150 people have lost their life because of the clash between the Meitei and Kuki ethnic groups. On the other hand, thousands have faced several injuries and more than 60,000 displaced by the violence. Apart from this, more than 12,000 have fled to the neighbouring Mizoram state.
Recent events, including the influx of Myanmar refugees and the state government’s drive to oust tribal communities from woodland, exposed old faultlines and reignited violence. The presence of arms in both groups and the failure of peace talks with Myanmar leaders have hampered efforts to restore peace in the region.
