Manipur: Fresh tensions erupted at Manipur’s Torbung village bordering Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts on Tuesday night. According to reports, a barrage of gunshots was heard around 8.30 pm, triggering tension among the people. Officials confirmed that a cross-firing took place between security forces and unknown armed miscreants in the conflict-scarred State.
One injured in gunfire
At least one civilian was reportedly injured in the gunfire. According to residents of Phougakchao Ikhai and Torbung, under the government’s instruction, around 389 internally displaced people from 67 families were relocated to Torbung. On Tuesday night, some unknown armed miscreants from the Churachandpur side allegedly launched an attack at the border village. In response, security forces retaliated immediately.
Reinforcement teams deployed in the area
The miscreants also allegedly used bombs that continued exploding for about 20 minutes. Officials said reinforcement teams from State police and central security forces have been deplpyed at the area to restore order, but the situation remains tense.
Manipur DCP chairs security review meeting
Manipur has been reeling under crisis since May 3, 2023. So far, 260 individuals have been killed, and over 60,000 displaced. To restore order, President’s rule has been imposed in the state since February 13. Recently, on December 14, BJP MLAs, including 4 Kuki-Zo, held a meeting in Delhi for the restoration of peace.
On Tuesday, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur visited the Churachandpur district, where he chaired a security review meeting with Manipur Police and other security forces.
