Manipur Crisis
Manipur was hit by violence on May 3 during the course of a solidarity march called by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) in Torbung area of Churachandpur, to protest the lonstanding demand of the Meitei community to include them in the list of the state’s Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Earlier last month, the Manipur High Court directed the state government to consider the request of the Meitei, that caused dissatisfaction among other tribal groups.
In its petitions, the Meitei community mentioned that they once used to have the ST tag before the merger of Manipur with the Indian Union and now they want to restore it.
This led to a historical tensions between the Meitei community and other tribals who opposed the decision saying that the former have enough represntation in the state already.
Meanwhile, the Meiteis claimed that they want the ST tag to stop the influx of outsiders and and protect ther communtiy from “infiltrators.”
As per last census in 2011, Meiteis account for 64.6 per cent of population who are mostly Hindus while other tribes such as Nagas and Kukis are nearly 40 per cent in number. The two tribes Nagas and Kukis are mosly Christians, occupying around 90 per cent of Manipur’s land.
Meities have more representation in the state Assembly considering that 40 of the 60 Assembly seats in the state are from the Imphal Valley region. This area is mostly inhabited by the Meiteis.
Meiteis Entered Kuki Villages Brandishig Guns
As per media reports, an official of the All Manipur Tribal Union informed that soon after their protest ended, people from Meitei community retaliated by brandishing guns and entered Kuki villages and set houses after houses on fire.
The violence left the state in devastating situation which followed ‘shoot at sight’ orders to Indian troops by the Manipur government to bring back the normalcy in the state.
