New Delhi: The scheduled visit of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday was cancelled after an unruly mob set ablaze the event venue in Churachandpur district on Thursday.
After the incident, the internet was suspended while public gatherings have been restricted to keep the law and order situation in control. Following which, the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) have been imposed.
An uncontrollable crowd on Thursday vandalised the venue and set fire to an open gym that was constructed at PT Sports Complex in New Lamka. The state CM was supposed to inaugurate the gym. Public meeting venue at Sadhbhav Mandap was also damaged.
It is worth noting that the incident took place during the shutdown call by the Indigenous Tribe Leaders Forum. There was a call for shutdown in Churachandpur from 8 am to 4 pm today.
The call was to protest the inaction of the state government over the reserved forested areas of farmers and other tribal settlers.
The news agency PTI quoted the forum who said, “The government has shown no sign of willingness or sincerity in addressing the plight of the people.”
