Kolkata: In a shocking incident at Kolkata’s IPGMER SSKM Hospital, Sourav Modak, the son of a patient, was violently attacked by a group of 15-20 men armed with hockey sticks and lathis on Sunday morning.
What Happened?
The group assaulted Modak outside the trauma care unit, hitting him multiple times and leaving him with severe injuries. Despite the presence of police, the attackers fled the scene. Modak was rushed to the hospital’s trauma unit, where doctors treated him for critical injuries, including broken bones in his arms and legs.
Modak, traumatized by the attack, said he does not know the people who attacked him.

Security Concerns in Hospitals
This incident raises concerns about the safety of patients and families in Kolkata hospitals. Recently, protests at RG Kar Medical College highlighted similar issues following the murder of a trainee doctor.
Dr. Bipresh Chakroborty, a junior doctor, expressed disappointment, claiming that the police on duty did not intervene during the attack. Even though the incident was reported, no immediate case was filed.
Investigation in Progress
Bhawanipur police are investigating the incident and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the attackers. A case is expected to be lodged soon, and authorities are working to find those responsible.
This attack has sparked calls for stronger security measures to ensure safety in hospitals for both patients and staff.
