Mallikarjun Kharge slams EC, accuses BJP of weaponising SIR, says ‘Congress committed to safeguarding integrity of electoral rolls’

Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge stressed that the Congress will expose every attempt that is made to delete genuine voters or insert bogus ones.

Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday, stated that the party is unequivocally committed to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral rolls. His statement came after the Congress held a comprehensive strategy review meeting over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) today. The meeting was attended by AICC General Secretaries, AICC In-Charges, PCCs, CLPs, and AICC Secretaries from the states/UTs where the SIR process is underway. MP Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal and other prominent Congress leaders were present in the meeting.

Congress chief slams EC

In a statement posted on X, Kharge called the Election Commission’s conduct during the SIR process as deeply disappointing. He expressed concern that public confidence in democratic institutions is already strained. Kharge urged the EC to demonstrate that it is independent, operates free of the BJP’s influence, and remains true to its Constitutional oath and allegiance to the people of India, rather than any ruling party. He asserted that the BJP is attempting to weaponise the SIR process for “Vote chori,” and warned that if the Election Commission turns a blind eye, such failure would amount not just to administrative negligence but a “complicity of silence.”

“At a time when public confidence in democratic institutions is already strained, the Election Commission’s conduct during the SIR process has been deeply disappointing. It must immediately demonstrate that it is not operating under the BJP’s shadow and it remembers its Constitutional oath and allegiance to the people of India, not to any ruling part. We firmly believe that the BJP is attempting to weaponise the SIR process for Vote Chori. And if the EC chooses to look the other way, that failure is not just administrative - it becomes a complicity of silence,” Kharge wrote on X.
