In a swift and decisive action, security forces successfully destroyed a potent Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Hafrada village of Villgam, north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, on Tuesday, averting a potential disaster.
According to official sources, the incident unfolded when a Road Opening Party (ROP) from the army and J&K Police was conducting a routine patrol in the area. During their patrol, the troops discovered a suspicious object along the roadside. Upon closer inspection, they identified it as an IED weighing approximately 12 kilograms.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, the ROP immediately alerted local authorities. The Special Operations Group (SOG) of Handwara Police quickly arrived at the scene to assist the ROP party in securing the area and ensuring the safety of nearby residents.
A Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was summoned and promptly defused the explosive device, preventing what could have been a catastrophic incident. Following the successful operation, security personnel conducted a thorough search of the vicinity to eliminate any additional threats.
Officials emphasized that had the IED detonated, it could have resulted in significant loss of life and property, particularly given that the route is frequently traversed by both security forces and civilians.
