The Maharashtra schools are expected to remain closed tomorrow (December 9) due to a statewide protest strike by several organisations representing school teachers. Around 15 teachers’ organisations have come together for a ‘school shutdown’ to oppose the implementation of the state government’s new Sanch Manyata policy for teacher appointments. Students and parents should note that there has been no official announcement regarding school closures made by the Mumbai government for tomorrow (December 9).

Maharashtra Schools Closed: Will There Be a School Holiday Today, December 6?

As of now, there’s no official confirmation regarding the closure of the schools. Schools are expected to remain closed tomorrow in Mumbai and several other districts. As per the scale of the strike and the march that has been planned, there is a strong possibility that many schools, especially those in districts outside Mumbai, will stay closed.

Traffic advisory and safety disruptions

Schools are expected to hold online classes due to traffic and safety disruptions. Students and parents are advised to contact their respective schools for the latest updates.

What is the new policy?

On March 15, 2024, the state school education department issued a government resolution notifying the Sanch Manyata Policy, which introduced group recognition and stopped the allocation of teachers to schools with fewer than 20 students.

The teachers’ group accused the state government

The protest started on December 5, 2025, after several teachers’ unions accused the state government of imposing regulations they believe are unfair. They have been demanding that these policies be rolled back immediately. With no progress made in talks so far, the strike has entered its second day.

Teacher groups claim that out of nearly 25,000 schools in Maharashtra, about 18,000 secondary schools for Classes 9 and 10 remained completely shut on Thursday. The disruption was particularly severe in regions like Marathwada, where a large number of schools did not function well. Meanwhile,

The Maharashtra government has taken a tough position on the strike. It has been warned that teachers and non-teaching staff who join the protest will face strict consequences, including a deduction of one day’s salary.

Dr. Mahesh Palkar, Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, has directed education officers across all districts, including those under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, to ensure that schools stay open.
