Maharashtra Schools Closed: Will There Be School Holiday Tomorrow, December 6?

As of now, there is no official confirmation on whether schools will be closed across Maharashtra on December 6. However, given the scale of the strike and the planned march, it is highly likely that many schools specially in districts outside Mumbai may remain shut.

Statewide Strike In Maharashtra

The protest began on December 5, 2025, after teachers’ bodies accused the state government of enforcing rules they consider unfair and demanding immediate withdrawal of certain policies. Since their demands have not been addressed, the agitation has continued into a second day.

According to teacher associations, out of nearly 25,000 schools in Maharashtra, around 18,000 schools for Classes 9 and 10 remained completely suspended on Thursday. The impact has been felt strongly in regions such as Marathwada, where many schools were shut. In contrast, the strike caused relatively limited disruption in Mumbai, where most institutions continued operating.

A meeting was recently held in Pune to discuss the next steps of the protest. Teacher bodies have announced that a large march will be held on December 6, further signalling that the agitation is unlikely to end soon.

Government Issues Stern Warning

The Maharashtra government has taken a firm stance. It issued a warning stating that both teaching and non-teaching staff participating in the strike will face strict action, including deduction of one day’s salary.

Dr. Mahesh Palkar, Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, has instructed education officers across all districts, including the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, to ensure schools remain open.

However, teachers say the government’s approach has only intensified their anger. The Metropolitan Teachers’ Association called the salary cut order “an attack on teachers’ rights” and reaffirmed support for the ongoing movement. Several unions have declared that the protest will continue until their demands are fully met.

Parents and students are advised to stay in contact with their school authorities for the latest updates, as the situation remains fluid and decisions may be taken late in the evening.

With board examinations approaching, the strike has created concern among students and parents. Many fear that continued disruptions could affect academic preparation. Teacher organisations, however, insist that they had no choice but to protest, saying their long-pending issues must be resolved for the education system to function smoothly. As the standoff continues, Maharashtra’s education sector waits anxiously for a resolution.
