Maharashtra H3N2 death

Mumbai: A 73-year-old man died today due to H3N2 virus in the industrial area of Pimpri Chinchwad in Maharashtra’s Pune. The elderly was undergoing treatment for the past four days in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who dies on Thursday.

As per the officials, the patient was also suffering from COPD (pulmonary disease) and atrial fibrillation (heart disease). He had developed Covid-like symptoms such as fever and cold but, as per the health experts, the severity of the infection was not similar to Sars Cov 2.

This comes a day after state Health Minister Tanaji Sawant informed the state Assembly about 2 suspected deaths due to the H3N2 infection.

“Two persons have died due to influenza, including a 23-year-old first-year student of MBBS in Ahmednagar. He tested positive for Covid-19 as well as H1N1 and H3N2 viruses. Another victim is a 74-year-old man from Nagpur, who died of H3N2,” the minister had told the Assembly.

In the latest, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) announced that in several parts of the nation, cases of intense cough and fever may link to the Influenza A subtype H3N2 virus.

What is H3N2?

The H3N2 is a subtype of the seasonal Influenza. Young children and old age persons with co-morbidities are the most vulnerable groups in context of seasonal influenza. So far, Karnataka and Haryana have confirmed one death each from H3N2 influenza.

Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. India every year witnesses two peaks of seasonal influenza: one from Jan to March and other in post monsoon season.
