The Maharashtra government has withdrawn its earlier directive which mandated Hindi as the compulsory third language in Marathi and English-medium primary schools. A revised government resolution issued by the School Education Department now allows students from Classes 1 to 5 to choose any other Indian language in place of Hindi. Additionally, Marathi will continue to be a compulsory subject in all schools, irrespective of the medium.

What’s The Revised Directive?

According to the revised directive by the School Education Department, students from Classes 1 to 5 can opt for any other Indian language in place of Hindi. However, Hindi will be taught as third language in general.

The three-language formula will be adopted from class 1. If more than 20 students in a class want to learn other languages instead of Hindi, the teacher will make it available or the language subject will be taught online.
