Maharashtra: Three people, including two women, reportedly lost their lives on Friday, and nine others were hospitalized following a gas leak caused due to a blast in a reactor at a fertiliser plant in the Sangli district of Maharashtra.
The incident occurred at the Myanmar Chemical Company in Shalgaon MIDC of Kadegaon tehsil, yesterday evening. According to Police, the blast took place after a reactor at the fertiliser plant exploded releasing chemical fumes.
Senior Inspector of Kadegaon police station, Sangram Shewale said, “Some 12 people in the unit were affected due to the blast and were rushed to the hospital. Among the people who died were two women workers and a security guard. Nine others are undergoing treatment.”
The leaked gas is suspected to be ammonia, Sangli Superintendent of Police Sandip Ghuge informed. Seven of the injured people have been hospitalised at Karad’s Sahyadri Hospital.
The other five are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an official said. The two who got killed have been identified as a 50-year-old woman from Yetgaon in Sangli district and a 26-year-old woman from Masur in Satara district, respectively.
