Amid the nationwide crackdown in search of spy networks working for Pakistan, the Maharashtra Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) carried out a major operation in Padgha village in Thane district on Monday morning. The operation involved raids at 8 to 10 suspected locations in collaboration with the Thane rural police, involving around 200 policemen.

Who Is Shakib Nachan?

Shakib Nachan, a former member of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), has previously been arrested in two major terror cases. His role was proven in the 2002-03 bomb blasts at Mumbai Central Railway Station, Vile Parle, and Mulund, in which many innocent people died. After serving his sentence, he was again accused of involvement in extremist activities in 2017.

It is noteworthy that earlier, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had conducted a large-scale raid in the Padgha area and detained many people.

The engineer who leaked confidential information about the Navy was also arrested.

Earlier, the ATS had arrested Ravikumar Verma, a junior engineer and technician working in the Indian Navy from Mumbai. Verma is accused of sharing sensitive information related to defense by staying in touch with a Pakistani female spy. Apart from him, a case has been registered against two more people in this case under the Official Secrets Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Ravikumar Verma’s police custody is ending on June 2. The ATS will present him in the Thane District Sessions Court and may seek extension of custody for interrogation.

Both these actions of Maharashtra ATS are considered a major blow to the terrorist network and espionage activities. Officials say that after interrogating the arrested suspects, more important information may come to light, which will help the country’s security agencies in further action.
