Prayagraj: Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh is not only famous for the confluence of holy rivers but also for its delicious food. The city boasts a vibrant culture, rich traditions, and a deep history. It is home to the world’s largest religious gathering, the Kumbh Mela. Several shops, running for over 50 years, offer a variety of sweets, making it a perfect spot for visitors to indulge in all kinds of dishes.
Hira Halwai & Sons
One such shop is Hira Halwai and Sons, which has been running since 1942 in Prayagraj. It is considered a landmark sweet shop in the region. Their shuddh desi ghee gujiyas and other sweets have been a favourite among the residents. The shop is located at 61/36/A-2, Sardar Patel Marg, Katra, Civil Lines, Prayagraj. One astonishing fact about this shop is that it has been known for its Gulab Jamun made in pure ghee since 1942. Sweets available at this shop include: Dry fruit laddu, Besan laddu, Motichoor laddu, Kaju Barfi, Ghari ki Barfi, Kalakand, Malai laddu, and Laal Barfi.”
A customer said, “The soft and spongy Gulab Jamuns are made from fresh milk and use recipes that have been developed over the years. They are an epitome of Prayagraj’s cuisine.”
The legacy of sweet delicacies was established in 1942 by the late Hira Lal Kesarwani, later followed by his sons and then grandsons. As per reports, when it first opened, the shop was crowded with British officers throughout the day. However, when the country gained independence, the British left, but the shop remained in its place.
Shop owner Ashok Kesarwani had earlier said, that the shop was opened by his father in 1938. Since then, the quality and purity of the sweets made here have been famous.
