Two newborns, who were born last week, were allegedly bitten by rats in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a government hospital in Indore. As the incident came to light, the authorities launched an investigation.
The newborns were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharaja Yashwantrao Chikitsalaya (MYH), one of the state’s leading hospitals. Officials said when the nursing staff saw injury marks on the children’s bodies, they immediately informed the hospital administration.
Following this, CCTV cameras installed in the NICU were scanned, and it was spotted that rats were roaming around the newborns. The incident took place on Monday and Tuesday.
“In the last 48 hours, one infant in the Intensive Care Unit has been bitten by rats on his fingers, while another newborn was bitten on the head and shoulder,” hospital superintendent Dr. Ashok Yadav told news agency PTI on Tuesday.
According to Dr. Yadav, both the babies had been suffering from some physical problems since birth. One of these babies was found abandoned in the Khargone district and was brought to MYH for treatment. He also said that the condition of both the newborns is stable at the moment.
Officials said they had instructed hospital management to take action and install strong grills to prevent rats from entering inside the premises. Apart from this, family members of the admitted patients were informed to not bring food inside the ward.
