On Durgapur gangrape case, West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja said, "... There has been an unfortunate incident in a private medical college in a private college in Durgapur. The complaint is of a gang rape. The police are investigating. There's an ongoing investigation. The parents of the victim have arrived from Odisha, and they have expressed faith in the ongoing investigation. The victim is being looked after, the medical and psychological counselling and checkup are on, and her deposition is also very important. BJP is a political party, and such crimes against women should not be politicised. Unfortunately, the BJP always views such through a political lens, which is most unwarranted. We dont want to reiterate that Calcutta is also one of the safest metropolises in all of India. We do not want to reiterate because everybody knows that West Bengal works for women's and girls' empowerment. We don't want to reiterate because everybody knows that the chief minister doesn't compromise with any kind of injustice against women. We have to wait for the investigation to be completed. And the BJP should not politicise or try to take a political advantage out of this. We can just add that incidents of girls who have burned themselves because of harassment in Odisha are also very unfortunate. Crime on woman or self-immolation is also a very unfortunate happening in a BJP-ruled state; do not politicise..."
