Chief Justice of India BR Gavai has assured that the Supreme Court will revisit its decision to ban stray dogs from the streets of Delhi-NCR, following widespread public outrage. Earlier on Monday, the court had directed that all stray dogs be moved from residential areas to shelters, citing a surge in dog bite incidents and rabies cases - a move that sparked mixed reactions across society.
Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) welcomed the Supreme Court's order, while animal activists raised concerns, pointing out that civic bodies lack the resources and funding required for such a large-scale relocation of stray dogs.
The matter was brought to the attention of Chief Justice BR Gavai this morning. He was informed of an earlier court ruling that prohibited the relocation or culling of stray dogs and emphasized adherence to existing animal welfare laws. "I will look into this," the Chief Justice responded, offering a glimmer of hope to thousands of animal lovers who oppose the court’s recent directive to remove stray dogs from the streets of Delhi-NCR.
