Ahead of the highly-awaited judgment on the rape-murder of a Trainee Doctor in RG Kar Medical College today, around 300 security forces were reportedly deployed at the Sealdah court. The 31-year-old trainee doctor was found dead in the state-run College & Hospital’s seminar hall on August 9, 2024. The probe for the high-profile case was earlier handed over from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The crime investigating agency had sought ‘maximum punishment’ for the accused Sanjay Roy, according to reports. The trial was concluded on January 9. The deceased doctor’s father on Saturday said the court will decide whatever punishment is appropriate. He told ANI that they will keep knocking on the court’s door until justice is served.
“Not just one, but the DNA report shows the presence of four boys and one girl. We will feel some relief when the accused are punished. Until we get justice, we will keep knocking on the doors of the court and will also seek the support of the people of the country,” the father said.
The incident sparked nationwide outrage and demonstrations, prompting the state and central government to strengthen the security measures across Government hospitals. There were prolonged protests by junior doctors in West Bengal who demanded justice for the victim. The trial in the case started in Kolkata court on November 11. Additionally, the CBI filed a charge-sheet regarding financial irregularities at RG Kar in November, 2024.
