The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested Sandip Ghosh, former director of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with a police officer for alleged delay in registering FIR and lack of evidence in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor.
Earlier, the central probe agency arrested Ghosh in a separate probe into financial irregularities. He is remanded till September 23. The arrested policeman is SHO Abhijit Mandal of Tala police station.
On August 26, the CBI had conducted a second round of polygraph tests on the former director as part of its ongoing probe into the rape and murder of a doctor at a government hospital.
The Calcutta High Court has given three weeks to the CBI to submit a status report on the probe, which will be submitted on September 17.
Kolkata Rape-Murder Case & Protests
The body of a 31-year-old female doctor in the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was found on August 9. Autopsy reports suggest that she was brutally raped before her murder.
The BJP has accused Ghosh of ordering renovation works near the seminar room where the doctor’s body was found on August 9. Union minister and West Bengal BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar shared a letter purportedly signed by Sandip Ghosh approving the renovation works.
“The order, signed by Sandip Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College, is dated August 10, just one day after the victim’s death. Despite allegations from colleagues and protesters about tampering with the crime scene, the Police Commissioner denied it,” the BJP leader had posted on X.
The CBI had last week alleged that Sandip Ghosh, along with the other “co-accused”, had a “criminal nexus” to earn “wrongful gains”. The agency also arrested two vendors for alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar hospital.
“Ghosh knew these (two) vendors as he was working at the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. We found that they had awarded the contracts to RGKMC&H (RG Kar Medical College and Hospital) only because of their proximity to Ghosh,” a CBI official told PTI.h Ghosh,” a CBI officer told PTI.
