After receiving criticism for his remarks on the trainee doctor’s rape and murder case, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly is set to join thousands of protestors in Kolkata on Wednesday. He will take to the streets to condemn the crime and later join another protest organized by his wife’s dance school.

Social Media Solidarity and Criticism

Ganguly recently changed his social media profile picture to black to express solidarity with the victim. However, this gesture drew backlash from netizens who viewed it as superficial, with many demanding an apology for his earlier comments defending the Mamata Banerjee government.

Why Was Sourav Ganguly Criticised?

Ganguly faced criticism for downplaying the gravity of the incident by referring to it as a “stray incident” and asserting that women are generally safe in West Bengal and India. He suggested that such incidents occur globally and shouldn’t lead to assumptions about the safety of women in the state.

He condemned the crime, emphasizing the need for severe punishment for the culprits and calling for justice to ensure such incidents don’t happen again. By joining the protests, Ganguly appears to be addressing the criticism and advocating for justice in the case.
