A new case has come to light where a woman journalist who was reportedly returning from work was allegedly slapped, abused, and molested by a 55-year-old passenger who was travelling in the same bus.
The accused is identified as Sanjay Basak, who is said to be a resident of Narayanpur was seated at the seat which was reserved for ladies in a private bus on a Friday Night. A complaint was filed against him.
According to TOI reports, the man started touching the woman inappropriately after taking the seat beside her in Ultadanga, The woman told TOI that, “I asked him several times to sit properly, but he was abusive and questioned my morality since I was returning so late at night and advised me to take a cab instead. Initially, I tried to adjust, but after some point, the discomfort was too much, and I shouted at him, raising an alarm. Getting shocked at how the woman started screaming, the man stood up and created a barrier the woman kept her purse between. She also said, “The man picked up the bag and threw it at me. As I got startled and raised my voice, he slapped me and began tugging at my clothes, which eventually got torn. After all this also the woman was not intimidated and dialled the local police to report the unfortunate incident. The police were also supportive enough and asked her to get down at Baguiati crossing and promised to send a team of officers at the earliest.
The woman showed bravery by dragging the man out of the bus with the help of some of the co-passengers and taking him to the Baguiati police station. The Bidhannagar City Police officer told TOI, “We have registered a case under BNS sections dealing with molestation, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, criminal intimidation, wrongful restraint, and mischief, and arrested the person from the spot. The woman, who underwent a medical examination, will depose her confidential statement before the magistrate on Monday”. Basak was presented before a Barasat court, which granted him bail with conditions of timely appearance before the magistrate and not leaving the city without an investigating officer.
