Kolkata Rape Murder Case: The CBI yesterday arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Dr. Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station officer Abhijit Mondal in connection with the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor that occurred within the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9. Dr Ghosh is now in judicial custody under charges of corruption when he made new charges against him in connection with the ongoing investigation of the case. He is also under inquiry in the ED with money laundering, which raided related cases about.

Charges And Investigations
According to the charge, Dr. Ghosh is accused of hindering an investigation and fabricating evidence. The CBI alleged that Ghosh was delaying reporting the murder of the victim and the registration of FIR, which prejudiced the investigation. The agency has sent the accused to remand by a local court for further investigation into his role in the rape and murder case. He was arrested on September 2 in another case of financial irregularities during his tenure as principal.

The Supreme Court, in a suo motu case on September 9 highlighted a significant delay in the registration of the FIR, observing that the discrepancy between the general diary entry and the FIR itself was at least 14 hours. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stressed this delay alone was serious.

Mondal’s Arrest And Protest Reaction
Abhijit Mondal, in-charge of Tala police station, was accused and arrested for inability to prove his innocence regarding these questions. Mondal is accused of tampering with evidence and delaying the registration of FIR. The police station concerned caters to the area where the hospital is located.

Md Mondal made contradictory statements to CBI, says an officer. He has been arrested and will appear in court soon since he was questioned for several hours on Saturday.

Response From Doctors’ Protest
In contrast, junior doctors at Swasthya Bhavan welcomed the arrest. They are demanding action against those who tampered with the evidence. “We are happy that the CBI has arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal. We hope that the probe continues and the other people who have tampered with evidence are also arrested,” said one of the protesting doctors.
