Kolkata Rape-Murder: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar resigned from his post on Sunday to protest against West Bengal government’s mismanagement of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.

He wrote a letter to the TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee, criticising the ‘unchecked domineering attitude of the corrupt and favoured few’ within the party. Sircar also expressed his disappointment over being unable to meet with CM Banerjee for months and criticized the inaction against the corrupt officials.

Sircar Expresses Disillusionment With TMC’s Handling Of Corruption

Sircar stated that he became more disillusioned as the TMC government appeared unconcerned about corruption and the aggressive tactics of certain leaders. “I just cannot accept corrupt officers (or doctors) getting top postings,” he said.

The TMC MP’s resignation comes amid widespread outrage in the state, following the brutal rape and murder of Kolkata’s 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical Hospital. He further alleged that the TMC government has lost the trust of the people of Bengal.

“I have never witnessed such widespread angst and no-confidence against the government in all my years, even when it makes correct statements,” he remarked.

Sircar Urges Non-Confrontational Approach To Address Protests

Sircar wrote, “I have endured for a month since the terrible incident took place, hoping for your direct intervention in the junior doctors’ protests, in the old style of Mamata Banerjee.” However, the government’s recent actions are both inadequate and late.

He also advised the party to take on a non-confrontational stance, emphasizing that the protesters only demand justice, not political gain. He cautioned the party that their failure to address these issues might lead to communal forces seizing control of the state.
In a crucial step, Sircar announced his decision to step back from politics. “I appreciate the opportunity to raise Bengal’s issues in Parliament for three years, but I will no longer serve as MP” he declared.

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
