Kolkata Rape Murder Case: The CBI has submitted a chargesheet in the tragic case involving the rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The chargesheet includes crucial details about the crime, the victim’s injuries, the cause of death, and significant evidence pointing to Sanjoy Roy, the main accused.
Charges Against Sanjoy Roy
On Tuesday, the CBI filed a chargesheet in Sealdah’s special court against Sanjoy Roy, a former contractual staff member with the Kolkata Police, accusing him of raping and murdering the on-duty doctor. CBI sources revealed that nearly 200 statements were recorded and included in the chargesheet.
The CBI relied significantly on the investigation initially conducted by the Kolkata Police, which gathered both digital and physical evidence. The chargesheet highlights CCTV footage from the hospital, showing Roy inside the premises on August 9, the date of the alleged crime. The footage shows him entering the trauma center at 3:34 AM, dressed in a T-shirt and jeans and holding a helmet.
Important Evidence And Timeline
The chargesheet states that at 4:03 AM, Roy was caught moving towards the ward in which the victim was kept. By 4:32 AM, he was seen coming out of the ward with the helmet but without the Bluetooth neckband which he was seen sporting earlier. On the day of the crime, the local police found a Bluetooth earphone at the scene, which became essential for linking Roy to the incident.
In addition to the earphones, the CBI produced other crucial physical evidence: the victim’s mobile phone and laptop; blood samples of both the victim and the accused; and articles that were subjected to autopsy. Forensic scientists examined clothes and bedding from the crime scene. Clothes taken from Roy’s barracks were found to contain the victim’s blood, thereby directly linking him to the crime.

Autopsy Finding
According to the chargesheet, the victim died due to asphyxia caused by strangulation and asphyxia through smothering. CBI said it saw fresh hymenal injuries on the victim, indicating that the victim must have been subjected to a violent sexual assault. The forensic science experts also said there was evidence of the victim’s resistance as they found marks on Roy’s body which could suggest that he had attempted to retaliate when he was being attacked.
Scientific Evidence And Technical Data
The research was highly scientifically based. DNA tests revealed that Roy’s saliva was found on the body of the victim, and the samples collected from under her nails matched his DNA. Hairpieces found at the crime scene included strands found to be coming from Roy. Blood from the victim was also found on his jeans and shoes. The evidence also came from the CCTV footage showing him in the same clothes the day he committed the crime.
Mobile tower data further reveals that Roy was in the proximity of RG Kar Hospital in the vicinity of 3:30 -4 :00 AM on the day of the crime. The autopsy report further revealed that she was murdered around the same time and provided a timeline for when Roy was involved.
Medical Review By Experts And Ongoing Probe
Before the chargesheet was filed, the CBI had approached a panel of doctors from some of the premier hospitals to examine the evidence. The doctors agreed that the victim had died of asphyxia and that she had been raped around 12 hours before the post-mortem examination. Their findings are in line with the earlier inquest report submitted, and, therefore, credibility has been lent to the process of autopsy.
The CBI also plans to probe former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijeet Mondal, who are being probed for possible tampering with evidence in the case.
Next Steps In The Legal Process
The CBI chargesheet was accepted by a court here yesterday and the case against Sanjoy Roy would be tried in-camera to protect the sensitivities of the case. The court also fixed November 4 as the date for framing of charges, an important step towards delivering justice to the young doctor and her family. The case has been under investigation till now; the CBI, while assuring a fair trial, is trying to bring out the truth of this tragic incident into the light.
