Dr. Ghosh’s failure to report the discovery of the doctor’s body to the police immediately has raised suspicions, with the IMA citing complaints from the victim’s family about his lack of empathy and failure to handle the situation properly. The IMA’s disciplinary committee made the decision to suspend him, highlighting accusations from other doctors in Bengal that his actions tarnished the medical profession.
CBI Investigation and Evidence
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been closely scrutinizing Dr. Ghosh, conducting an 11-hour search of his home and seizing substantial evidence. Dr. Ghosh has already been questioned for nearly 90 hours as the investigation continues. The CBI, under the direction of the Calcutta High Court, has yet to make further arrests in connection with the case.
Controversial Appointment and Public Backlash
Dr. Ghosh initially resigned from his post at RG Kar Hospital, citing moral responsibility. However, shortly afterward, the West Bengal government appointed him to lead Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMC). This decision sparked widespread protests from both CNMC staff and those involved in the ongoing demonstrations surrounding the doctor’s murder. The Calcutta High Court intervened, ordering Dr. Ghosh to take extended leave and questioning the rationale behind his new appointment.

Supreme Court Criticism
Dr. Ghosh’s handling of the situation has also come under scrutiny from the Supreme Court, which criticized the 14-hour delay in filing a First Information Report (FIR) after the discovery of the doctor’s body. The court raised concerns about Dr. Ghosh’s role, asking who he had been in contact with during this critical period, further casting doubt on his actions.
Political Fallout
The case has led to a political war of words between West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition BJP. Both parties have traded accusations about the investigation’s progress, with critics of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleging that her government is shielding Dr. Ghosh. The CBI’s involvement, ordered by the High Court, has added another layer of tension as both sides argue over the efficiency of state versus federal investigations.
