Kolkata Rape Murder Case: The grieving family of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month, has accused the police of attempting to suppress the case. The victim’s parents revealed their pain and frustration, claiming that the Kolkata Police hurriedly cremated their daughter’s body and even offered them money in an attempt to silence them. These shocking allegations have added fuel to the ongoing protests demanding justice for the young doctor.

‘Police Tried to Hide the Truth,’ Says Victim’s Father

In an emotional address to the media, the victim’s father shared the family’s harrowing experience. ‘From the very beginning, the police tried to clean up the case. ‘They didn’t allow us to see our daughter’s body and made us wait at the police station while they took her for a post-mortem examination. Later, when they handed the body over to us, a senior officer offered us money, which we immediately refused,’ he said, tears filling his eyes.

This accusation has raised serious questions about the police’s handling of such a sensitive and tragic case. The parents, heartbroken and outraged, joined the protesting doctors and medical students at RG Kar Medical College. They stood alongside those fighting for justice, hoping that their daughter’s tragic death would get budget.

Mass Protests Sweep Kolkata Over Doctor’s Death

Since August 10, large-scale protests have erupted across West Bengal, with people from all walks of life demanding accountability and action. The tragic incident has united medical professionals, students, civil society groups, and citizens, all seeking justice for the young trainee doctor. Protests have taken place in various parts of Kolkata, with thousands of people holding torches and candles in honor of the victim.

In one of the symbolic protests, junior doctors presented a hand-made artificial spine to Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, calling on the police force to “grow a backbone” and take responsibility for their alleged lapses in the case. The protest reflects the deep anger and disappointment felt by those who believe the police failed to protect the victim and ensure a fair investigation.

Government And Public Outrage

The tragic death of the young doctor has not only shaken the medical community but has also led to widespread public outrage. On September 2, the West Bengal Assembly passed the ‘Aparajita Women and Child Bill,’ seeking the death penalty for rape convicts if their actions result in the victim’s death or a vegetative state. This landmark legislation, passed unanimously, demonstrates the state’s commitment to justice for rape victims.

Even the West Bengal Governor, CV Ananda Bose, showed his support by switching off the lights at the Raj Bhavan as a mark of protest. This act of solidarity mirrored the growing demands for swift justice and a transparent investigation into the case.

 Takes Over The Investigation

On August 9, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at the hospital. Authorities discovered her semi-naked body in the hospital’s seminar hall. The next day, police arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the crime. The Calcutta High Court later transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), emphasizing the need for a more impartial investigation.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
