The ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and former officer in charge of the Tala police station were granted bail on Friday in connection with the alleged rape and murder case of an on-duty doctor in Kolkata.
Mondal faced accusations of delaying the filing of an FIR in the case, while Ghosh was charged with tampering with evidence.
Both individuals were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case following an order from the Calcutta High Court. The Sealdah court granted bail to Mondal and Ghosh after the chargesheet was not filed within the statutory 90-day period, according to Ghosh’s lawyer.
Mondal’s lawyer confirmed that he would be released from judicial custody, while Ghosh, who is already in judicial remand for another case involving alleged financial irregularities at R G Kar Hospital, will remain in custody despite being granted bail in the rape-murder case.
On August 9, a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in a private college in Kolkata.
The next morning, her body was found in a seminar room inside hospital premises. Later, on 10 August 2024, a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of committing the crime. After three days of countrywide uproar, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to CBI.
