Kolkata Doctor Murder Case: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has ruled out gang rape in the tragic death of a doctor from Kolkata last month. The evidence collected so far points only to Sanjay Roy, who is already in police custody, as the sole perpetrator in the rape and murder that took place at RG Kar Hospital. The CBI, which took over the case after an order from the Kolkata High Court, is now in the final stages of its investigation and is expected to file charges soon.

CBI’s Investigation Nears Completion

As reported by NDTV  the CBI is moving quickly to wrap up the investigation. Sources confirm that the agency has been working diligently to examine all available evidence. They have sent crucial DNA samples from the accused for further examination at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The agency is waiting for the final expert opinions from doctors before concluding the case.

The CBI has conducted an extensive inquiry, recording over 100 statements and conducting 10 polygraph tests. Notably, two polygraph tests were conducted on Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former chief of RG Kar Hospital, though there is no evidence at present to suggest others were involved in the crime.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Delay

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been vocal in her criticism of the delay in the investigation. She had initially requested the state police to handle the case but was overruled by the High Court, which handed the case to the CBI. Banerjee expressed frustration over the slow pace of progress, questioning the delay in justice despite it being over 16 days since the transfer to CBI. Banerjee’s remarks reflect the political pressure mounting around the case, with civil society and opposition parties also raising concerns.

Arrest of Dr. Sandip Ghosh And Alleged Irregularities

In a parallel development, the CBI arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former chief of RG Kar Hospital. While Dr. Ghosh was not directly implicated in the rape and murder, he was arrested on charges of financial misconduct during his time at the hospital. Dr. Ghosh is accused of selling unclaimed bodies, trafficking in biomedical waste, and accepting bribes for awarding tenders. The CBI investigation into these charges was triggered by a petition filed by a former hospital employee, Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali.

Dr. Ghosh’s arrest has led to his suspension by both the Bengal government and the Indian Medical Association. His home in Kolkata was raided by the CBI as part of the ongoing investigation into these financial irregularities.

Public Outrage And Protests Amid Kolkata Case

The horrific crime has sparked outrage across the country, with widespread protests from medical professionals, civil society groups, and opposition parties. The case has drawn attention not only because of the gruesome nature of the crime but also due to allegations made by the victim’s family that the police attempted to cover up the incident. The family has accused the police of trying to bribe them to suppress details of the crime, claims that the police have firmly denied.

The victim’s parents have also expressed frustration with the handling of the case, stating that they were pressured to cremate the body despite wanting to preserve it. They claim that a large number of police officers surrounded them and created an intimidating environment. The government, however, has pushed back against these accusations, stating that opposition parties are spreading rumors to create unrest.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
