Who Is Rajeev Verma? IAS Officer Set to Replace Dharmendra as Delhi’s Chief Secretary

Rajeev Verma, a 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer, has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Delhi, effective October 1, 2025.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification on Sunday, September 28, appointing IAS officer Rajiv Verma as the new Chief Secretary of Delhi. He will take over the post from 1 October. Rajiv Verma will replace the current Chief Secretary Dharmendra, who is retiring on 30 September.

The notification states that "With the approval of the competent authority, Mr. Rajiv Verma, IAS (AgMut: 1992) has been transferred from Chandigarh to Delhi Government (GNCTD) as Chief Secretary from 1 October 2025 or from the date of taking charge from 1 October 2025 or from the date of taking charge."

Who is Rajiv Verma?

Rajiv Verma is a 1992 batch IAS officer of AgMut cadre and has now been appointed Chief Secretary of Delhi. He was born in 1966 in Uttar Pradesh.

Academic background:

He did his graduation in Computer Science from Roorkee University and then obtained an MTech degree from IIT. This information is available on the government portal supremo.nic.in.

His administrative experience:

Rajiv Verma started his career as a SDO in Eizol, Mizoram between 1994 and 1996. He has also worked in important ministries like defense, finance, urban development, health and transport. He was the Deputy Commissioner of Delhi from 2000 to 2002.

He then played the role of Additional Secretary in the Urban Development Department of Delhi Government and Planning and Program Implementation Department. He was then posted in Goa. He has also served as Principal Secretary and Commissioner in Delhi. From 2013 to 2017, he was the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defense and later also the Chairman and MD of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

In 2024, he was made an advisor to Chandigarh Administrator Banwarilal Purohit and was also given additional charge of Chandigarh Housing Board. "Rajiv Verma is a qualified and following officer who also adopts a practical approach," a senior official of Delhi's Finance Department told Indian Express.
