The Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2025 commenced with great enthusiasm at the iconic NDS Stadium in Leh, marking a significant milestone in India’s sporting journey. The event, which runs until January 27, is being hosted by the Union Territory of Ladakh, with the snow games set to take place in Jammu and Kashmir from February 22-25.
In a heartening message delivered from Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his congratulations to Ladakh and Jammu Kashmir for hosting this prestigious national sports meet. He emphasized the importance of the KIWG in elevating India’s sporting culture and promoting tourism in these breathtaking regions. “Ladakh and JK have not only elevated the culture of sports in our country but also showcased the beauty and diversity of our nation,” PM Modi stated.
Though Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya faced travel challenges due to inclement weather, he declared the Games open via a virtual address, highlighting India’s transformation into a “4D sports nation.” Dr. Mandaviya noted that the diverse geographical features of India provide unique opportunities for various sports, from winter games in the north to beach sports in the south.
The opening ceremony was a vibrant affair, featuring teams parading on skates and a cultural display that celebrated local traditions. The event also included an exhibition ice hockey match, setting an exhilarating tone for the competitions ahead. Among the dignitaries present was Lt. Governor of UT-Ladakh, Brigadier Dr. BD Mishra, who joined in celebrating this momentous occasion.
Dr. Mandaviya expressed optimism for the future of Indian sports, reflecting on India’s recent successes in chess, cricket, and the Olympics. “Our vision for KIWG was to challenge the world and to see India proudly standing atop the Winter Olympics podium,” he remarked.
With 19 teams representing various states, Union Territories, and institutional outfits like the Army and ITBP participating, KIWG 2025 features a total of 594 participants, including 428 athletes. This year’s event marks the fifth edition of the Winter Games and is particularly special as it returns to Ladakh for the second time.
The Khelo India initiative, launched by the Ministry of Youth Affairs Sports (MYAS), aims to promote sports at all levels across the country, fostering a new generation of athletes who can compete on global platforms.
As the KIWG 2025 unfolds, it promises to be a celebration of talent, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of sportsmanship in one of India’s most picturesque settings.
