Kerala, Tamil Nadu On Alert: Authorities Issue Safety Measures For ‘Kallakkadal Phenomenon’

The coastal areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu are likely to experience the "kallakkadal phenomenon," which means a sudden rise in sea waves

A warning has been issued for the coastal areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu regarding the “kallakkadal phenomenon,” which is expected to occur on the night of January 15, 2025. This phenomenon is characterized by sudden sea swells that can create rough waves, posing a potential threat to coastal communities.

The coastal areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu are likely to experience the “kallakkadal phenomenon,” which means a sudden rise in sea waves, causing rough conditions, on the night of January 15. This warning was issued by a central agency.

The waves could be up to 0.5 to 1.0 meters high until 11:30 pm on January 15, and there may be a threat of sea surge, according to the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).

Because of this warning, the Kerala Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised people living along the coast to move to safer areas if they are in danger-prone zones. Local authorities will guide them on where to go.

Coastal residents are also advised not to go into the sea in small boats or country boats and to safely secure their fishing boats in the harbor, an official statement said. Authorities have also asked people to avoid any tourism activities on the beaches until the warning is lifted.

Extra care should be taken because of the danger of coastal erosion, which could be worsened by the sudden rise in sea levels, the KSDMA added.

What Is Kallakkadal?

The term “kallakkadal” translates to “sea that comes suddenly like a thief.” It refers to unexpected and sudden increases in wave heights, which can reach between 0.5 to 1.0 meters. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has alerted residents that these conditions could last until 11:30 PM on January 15.

Safety Precautions

In light of this warning, the Kerala Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised

Several Safety measures:

Relocation: Residents living in vulnerable coastal areas should consider moving to safer locations as directed by local authorities.

Avoid Sea Travel: Fishermen and coastal dwellers are urged not to venture into the sea in small boats or vessels during this period.

Secure Vessels: Fishing boats should be safely moored in harbors to prevent them from being damaged by rough seas.

Tourism Caution: Tourists are advised to avoid beach activities until the warning is lifted, as high waves can pose serious risks.

Watch For Coastal Erosion: Extra vigilance is necessary regarding potential coastal erosion due to the swell surge.

The kallakkadal phenomenon serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea. Residents and visitors in Kerala and Tamil Nadu should take these warnings seriously and follow safety guidelines to ensure their well-being during this time. Staying informed and prepared can help mitigate risks associated with sudden changes in ocean conditions.
