Kerala: In a shocking incident, a Class 5 student reportedly died while 18 others sustained injuries after a school bus overturned at Valakkai in Kannur, Kerala on Wednesday (December 1, 2024). The victim identified as a 10-year-old girl was inside the bus when she was crushed to death as the vehicle overturned.
The bus which belonged to the Chinmaya School in Kurumathur had 20 students traveling in it out of which 15 were wounded. According to reports, the bus lost control while making way for another vehicle before overturning near the Valakkai Bridge.
However, some media outlets have suggested a brake failure as the cause of the accident. A thorough probe is underway, police said.

Locals quickly shifted the injured students to a nearby Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the victim’s body was transported to the Government Medical College at Pariyaram, reports added.
Caught On Camera
The accident captured on CCTV has been circulating on social media. The video shows the bus losing control and overturning onto the opposite road.

There is no official statement from the school management as of now. A case has been registered against the driver under sections 281, 125 (A) and 106 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
